Fuvahmulah starts selling sand again
DATE: 2007-07-02

After a break in operation due to the tidal waves that had struck the island, Fuvah Mulah has resumed selling sand once again.

According to Fuvah Mulah Island Chief, Muneer Hassan, it had been previously decided to resume operations once the weather improved and that so far the island had sold sandbags to about 200 people since Saturday.

“The weather is currently fine,” said Muneer. “So we have resumed the sale of sandbags as usual.”

When the business was temporarily brought to a halt last week, a group of people had even gathered near the Island Office demanding for the business to be resumed.

“When the lorry drivers had gathered near the office, I had explained to them why we can’t sell sandbags at the time,” said Muneer. “And they left once we told them that if the weather improves by Saturday we would continue the business. No disturbance had occurred due to the issue.”

Fuvah Mulah only sells sandbags for the construction of single-storey buildings in the island.
