Fuvahmulaku Kulhi
DATE: 2006-08-19
The freshwater lake of Fuvahmulah is beyond any doubt one of the central attractions of this island atoll. Located almost at the centre of the island there are two natural lakes in this island. However, the most famous being that of Bandara Kilhi located in Maalegam ward. The other freshwater lake is located in Dhadimago ward. The Bandaara Kilhi, which stretch across 274 metres (300 yards) which ditches running trough the marsh land that surrounds this lake.
The lakes provide abundance of water to irrigate yam fields and other crops nearby this lake. The lake and its smooth surface reflect the life of the people of this island atoll which is blessed with abundance of tropical fruits, such as banana, mango, and orange. At times the lake becomes a source of sustenance to the islanders when the rough season scares away fisherman from the sea they turn to the lake for their catch. This, of course is relevant more to the past; today canned tuna fish fill this gap in the diets of the Maldivian.
According to the legendary stories in ancient time’s Fuvahmulah used to be an atoll with a lagoon inside, thus fishermen sails their ships through the middle of the island right to the centre of the island where today the Kilhi and cultivated land is found. However, perhaps through passage of time the island’s entrance became closed by the sand and coral blocks and the ships were unable to enter the island. This formation then compelled the fishermen to dock their ships far from the island and at the tip of the island reef. When the entrance was completely closed what used to be once the lagoon transformed to fertile lands and a beautiful lake.
Though the island is blessed with this beautiful natural gift, it seems that its use and benefit has not been fully exploited by the islanders and indeed by the government. While there can be several options to turn the lake into an economic source, it can also be used to breed lake fishes as it was used in the past. On another level in western countries lakes are used as a mean of entertainment with boat trips and floating restaurants. Houses in western countries facing to more polluted rivers and lakes are much sort after; hence it is time for the government to use this beautiful venue for a more beneficial use of the islanders. A thought also comes that once tourism is introduced in this island this lake could be developed into an entertainment centre. One can imagine a restaurant in the middle with quiet boat trips offered by oarsmen taking families and couples for a quiet and romantic trip across the lake while enjoying a meal. Nevertheless, the natural beauty of this lake shall not be compromised with any material benefit, already a natural harbour (Rasgefannu) is gone, and the islanders would not want to loose this beautiful gift of the nature.
